New Map Features now Live: Track Rain, Clouds, and Lightning on the Map!

The AWEKAS Map has received a major upgrade. Version 3.2 is now live, bringing highly requested weather layers and performance improvements directly to your map view.

What’s New in 3.2

New Interactive Weather Layers

We have added two live data layers to give you a much more detailed look at changing weather patterns in real time:

  • Rain Radar: Track precipitation cells as they move across the map to see exactly where it is raining.
  • Cloud Height and lightning data: View cloud cover altitude to assess local sky conditions and thunderstorms. Monitor active storm systems with live lightning strike tracking.

Data Sources & Resolution

This data is currently available for Europe and features high-frequency updates:

  • Rain Radar Source: Powered by the EUMETNET OPERA project, delivering highly detailed 5-minute resolution radar images.
  • Clouds & Lightning Source: Powered by EUMETSAT, providing cloud and lightning tracking at a 10-minute resolution.

Smoother Visuals and Faster Map Performance

To ensure the map remains highly responsive even with multiple active layers, we have overhauled our rendering engine:

  • Optimized Overlays: We have tuned the map engine to load and scale overlays faster, reducing lag when panning, zooming, or toggling layers.
  • Fluid Wind Particles: The wind particle animation was slightly improved. Visuals are now crisper on high resolution displays.

We are already working on the next steps! These new weather layers and performance optimizations will be integrated into AWEKAS Stationsweb soon, bringing these advanced mapping capabilities directly to your personal station page.
